Hot Hot Dubai

Tiny Dubai is hot right now. White hot. The 1,500-square-mile emirate is planning and building on a scale usually associated with hosting the Olympics. And the Super Bowl, soccer’s World Cup and a World’s Fair — all at once. The only noise louder than the nonstop construction on more than 5,000 building sites — and the honking traffic trying to navigate the construction — is the international buzz about the place, most of it based on Dubai’s ability to thrive by creating the improbable.

It is a freak show on an international scale, with attractions and oddities you can’t believe exist, but that you can’t seem to look away from, and where outlandish projects that others deem too bizarre, too expensive or too impossible fill the skylines, the coastlines and the headlines.

And buzz has turned into bucks. Tourism, one of the driving forces behind the radical growth, attracted 6.5 million visitors last year, compared to just 500,000 in 1990. Even Cirque du Soleil is bringing a permanent show, although it’s hard to imagine the fantasy could out-bizarre the reality.
